Pencarrow House and gardens

Welcome to our family home

History of our family home

For nearly 500 years, Pencarrow has been the much-loved home of the Molesworth-St Aubyns, ever since John Molesworth arrived from Northamptonshire to become the Auditor for the Duchy of Cornwall and Queen Elizabeth I.

Still owned by his descendants, Pencarrow is anything but a museum. Family photos, children’s toys, hats on classical busts and pet dogs Oscar bring this Cornish mansion alive and allow you a glimpse of what it’s like to live surrounded by so much history. And please don’t be too surprised at the odd cobweb here or there – after all, this really is a family home.

House Tour

The guided house tour takes in 11 rooms and commences in the Music Room, with its outstanding rococo ceiling depicting the four seasons.

This Georgian house was redesigned in the 1770’s and boasts an impressive library with secret “jib” door, elegant but lived-in reception rooms, period bedrooms and collections of family prams, dolls, oriental porcelain, fascinating antique furniture and portraits including those by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Raeburn and more recently, Sir Oswald Birley.
